Abstract:
The aim of the thesis was to build a new structure beside an old forgotten architecture history of the city or space. The idea was to have an amalgamation of old and new time together. While deciding the topic I was looking for a thesis topic that represents the architecture of the past, the structure that represents old architecture style and methodology (not particularly heritage) which reminds us and connects us with the past.
I wanted to reimagine and refurbish the structure for new urban opportunities, for the need of the current scenario around the structure with introducing contemporary outlook and material in the design methodology.
While searching for the topic I came across the case of Watson hotel. Watson hotel is situated in the south of Bombay city. It is located in Kala Ghoda precinct in the fort area of Mumbai.
Now Watson’s hotel (Originally Watson’s Esplanade hotel) is now known as Esplanade Mansion.
The construction of the hotel was completed in 1871 and it was the first multi-level iron structure in the country at that time. It was also a one-of-a-kind luxurious hotel in Bombay and in the country.
In present times, the structure is in a dilapidated state, and dispute between the owner and the government has led the case into court that if the government should demolish the structure or retain and conserve the structure.
Here, I am exploring future possibilities for retaining the structure and giving it new urban value in the historic precinct of fort Mumbai.
