Abstract:
The culture of any society is identified through its language, art, and architecture. Architecture, as closely related to human life, reflects the culture of each society, and is closely related to the structure, history, politics, economy and social characteristics of the society. When people of all countries use material things to make buildings, they all try to follow their standards and maintain their values. The changing culture and social attitudes in the community have huge impact on architecture. Therefore, the role of culture in promoting architectural identity seems very important. This thesis attempts to create a Cultural Centre at Dashashwamedh Ghat which can dedicate to the rich Culture, Art and History of Varanasi.
Ghats in India are considered as a very secular space where people interact with the water of the holy rivers. It is one public space that interacts with the Indian culture and the importance of the rivers it has in it. There are many ghats in India among which Dashashwamedh, the main ghat in Varanasi on the banks of the holy Ganges is the oldest ghat known for its spiritual transcendence. It is common knowledge that Lord Brahma sacrificed 10 horses in a Yagna here, and thus the place got its name. Dashashwamedh Ghat tops the list of tourist places in Varanasi as it is a compelling space to dawdle in this small town. Ganga Aarti or Agni Pooja is the most popular activity performed over here.
The major concern identified was congestion and lack of infrastructure. Apart from that, the study comprehends the urban flow of the city, the need for public space, public amenities, and access to the site, user group, everyday activity at the ghats, festive activities; and after that it reciprocates the problems. And therefore, the design revolves around the functions that can not only uplift the environment of the local people but also add leisure spaces for the visitors which can create a remarkable experience for the user group.
